Memorial to the Covid-19 victims
BratislavaThe Covid-19 pandemic has touched everyone's lives. For three years, it has changed and continues to change the path we walk. Therefore, our proposal starts from the road/path that intersects/connects, space/places and everyone who is here must be on it, it cannot be avoided. The trail begins by descending the slope around the clinic, passes into the park through a dense grove of trees, then onto a short clearing between the shore and the grove, and immediately imaginatively crosses the lake, where it re-materializes into a trail on the opposite shore. The footpath is five metres wide and is divided transversely in the same grid. The path is one, but has different stages that leave their mark. We materialize these footprints in the trail as the spaces between the four concrete walls that cross the trail in the clearing between the lake and the grove. These spaces are isolated from each other despite their proximity. They refer to times of lockdown, of breaking relationships, of sharing and communicating with each other. Each wall also has its own door, which can remain closed or open to allow and reconnect places/footprints along the way. We connect these four concrete walls with two brick walls perpendicular to them that are parallel to the line of the path. Together the walls enclose three spaces, three empty rooms, which are meant to remind us of the empty rooms left by the victims of Covid-19. These empty rooms across Slovakia will be refilled with new life, but these three rooms in the park by the lake will always remain empty. A memorial to the empty rooms.

View of the monument with the light at the end
In each of the three empty rooms, between two concrete walls with doors and two brick walls, there is one hanging "bulb" lamp. The lamp is meant to fill the empty space with light while also illuminating the perforated brick facade in its "windows" (gaps), which memorialize the candles for the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic. The memorial has basic information about the course and number of victims of Covid-19 engraved on its concrete walls. The perforated brick wall offers a space where survivors can bring and place candles or flowers. The Empty Rooms Memorial is situated in the park next to an open grassed area, which is used for larger gatherings while leaving the space usable for a variety of leisure activities. The memorial can be closed at night as required. The Covid-19 pandemic is a landmark that divides our lives: into life before covid and life after covid. In the unpredictable waves of life, we do not know what is to come, but we can look to the light and truth that shines in the darkness and is hope over the abyss. Our journey ends with the light on the other side of the lake.

Thousand rooms
Empty rooms. In each a naked light bulb. Pouring on the ground light as sharp as snow, Into which silence pushes and fades. The night trail of your little white feet.
