Artist's residence
RatkaThe design of the house consists of two main levels. The first plane is the reconstruction of the old house, where we propose to keep the original house almost unchanged, enlarging the door openings for open portals. The original house is divided into two parts. A studio for artists and a pleasant temporary living space in the old house. The second level of the design is the addition of an extension, which houses a generous kitchen and living room along with a guest suite that can function as a separate unit of the house. The house extension is open to the garden, where care has been taken to preserve the cherry tree next to the house. Opening the extension to the garden spatially allowed to design a large terrace with a summer kitchen, which is directly connected to the living room. The design is characterised by the phasing of the project. First stage: reconstruction of the original house, living room with kitchen provisionally designed. Second stage: completion of the extension, when the extension is completed. The living room with kitchen will be moved, while the original living room will be used as a bedroom for the parents. The materiality is based on natural materials and the desire to preserve everything possible. The basic layout of the house is purposeful and still functional; some of the changes (e.g. addition of an entrance, addition of partitions) have reduced the quality of the interior space, but are easily removed or modified in the new design. The main idea of the architectural design is the reconstruction of the original house, where the layout of the house is cosmetically modified and the porch extension is removed. An extension will be added to the house to house a new living room with a kitchen and a small apartment. The phasing of the project is planned: the first step will be the reconstruction of the original family house, which will also serve as temporary housing. The second step will be an extension that will complete the house and the missing parts. The basic materials used in the construction of the house (solid wood, timber framing, brick) are still functional and, after light repair, can be used or "recycled" into a new shape and used as part of the interior. The biggest change will be the renovation of the interior of the original house, where the functions of individual rooms will change. The front façade of the original house retains the original earthen plaster, divided horizontally in earth tones. The windows on the façade facing the garden are enlarged.

Wider relations

Studio + housing
the connection of living with the artist's work in the studio space - a feeling of security and home

Extension
the main element of the design was the addition of the existing building, which is part of the reconstruction

Preserving the family cherry tree
the investor considered it important to keep the cherry tree that was originally on the property

Situation
The house is located in a development of family houses, which are connected on acreage different plots. From the preservation of the original buildings - the original houses it is clear that they have an identical roof plane (gable roof) and the shape of the house. This original appearance of the street with the typical structure of the houses is nowadays undisturbed by various degrading reconstructions and new buildings that do not respect the original morphology and urban structure. Therefore, we have tried to respect this character of the street in the urban design.

Concept
Removal of the original porch - Creation of a green platform - Subsequent installation of the proposed extension

View of the extension
The original building is partly basement, one-storey, raised to the ground, the roof is gabled on brick walls. Roofing material - baked tile. Structurally, it is built as a classic brick building with wooden beam ceilings, placed on the perimeter walls. The house is partly basement in 1/3 of the house, the foundations are apparently concrete, laid on a stone base, the walls of the foundations rise above the terrain and the whole house is raised about 80cm against the terrain. 2/3 of the footprint of the foundations are apparently filled with compacted embankment (gravel, cinder) and above this backfill is a wooden deck floor of the house. The ceiling above 1 np is apparently beamed, internally all surfaces are finished with lime plaster below the ceiling, apparently with reed matting. The floor of the loft consists of a timber soffit from which elements of the truss of the gabled roof protrude.
